For the first time ever, football will be played at SunTrust Park on Nov. 17 at 3 p.m. The Kennesaw State Owls will host the Jacksonville State Gamecocks, two teams currently ranked in the top-10 of the FCS rankings.
So how exactly will a football field look in the middle of a baseball stadium? Glad you asked:
A few things jump out at me here. First and foremost, routes to the corner of the end zone could get interesting, as there’s not much room for receivers to decelerate. Such is usually the case when a football field is squeezed onto a baseball field.
Also, the view from the Chop House probably won’t be great, so it will be advantageous to stay closer to the “first base line,” if you’re looking for tickets.
The field will have a similar layout to that of Georgia State University, which now plays their football games at the old Turner Field. However, that stadium has been modified, and a grandstand was built in what was the old right field, spanning through center field.
At 7-1, KSU currently holds the No. 2 ranking in the FCS national poll, and JSU is ranked No. 10. The Owls advanced – by beating JSU on the road – to the quarterfinals of the FCS playoffs a year ago, just their third season with a football program.
They currently lead the Big South conference, while JSU is in first place in the Ohio Valley with a 6-2 record.Follow @Sean_Breslin
