The Braves’ new renderings of the SunTrust Park fan plaza tell me one thing

A little more than a year after the Atlanta Braves announced they were moving to Cobb County to build a new stadium in the ‘burbs, the team unveiled several renderings Wednesday showing fans what the mixed-use development next to the stadium will look like.

“It will be a first of its kind: a brand new place to be that will simultaneously create a major sports venue and surrounding community, which will fit seamlessly together from the first pitch,” the Braves said on their website launched to keep fans updated on the latest news from the construction site and drawing room.

The pretty pictures gave Braves fans like me something shiny and fresh to look at as we drive by the site of the new stadium and see nothing but bulldozed land.

But if you look closer, the renderings will tell you the one big thing they told me: Starting in 2017, the Atlanta Braves will have the classiest ballpark space in Major League Baseball.

It might be more corporate than the area around Fenway Park, and it might not have the same charm as Wrigleyville, but it’s going to be gorgeous, carefully-planned and well worth the drive – even on nights when the Braves don’t play.

The renderings don’t shed any light on which businesses and restaurants will be purchasing space in the FanPlex because the Braves are likely still in initial discussions with interested parties. The mock-ups also don’t share any possible solutions to changes on the surrounding roadways that are expected from $1 billion of construction to help alleviate many of the issues that face the area around the new stadium.

I don’t see a lot of parking, either, but the Braves have promised us 6,000 spots on-site. The announcement of a brewpub connecting to the stadium that will remain open year-round was a pleasant surprise, though.

The initial phase of the mixed-use development will feature 700,000 to 1,000,000 square feet of retail, restaurant, hotel, residential and office space, so if you’re looking to start your first eatery or small business or take up residence, the Braves might have a space for you.
