The above screenshot of a deleted tweet by Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron’s mother was sent in the minutes following Florida State’s national championship victory over Auburn last month. It outlined a basic equation that jock equals dumb.
On Monday, Jameis Winston – FSU’s quarterback and the subject of that ill-contrived and short-lived tweet – was one of two FSU football players named to the 2013 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Football Team.
The honor goes to football players who finish the fall semester with a 3.0 grade point average or higher, but they also must maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA throughout their academic career, according to an Orlando Sentinel report.
So Winston is one of the smartest players on the team – freshman safety Nate Andrews was the other FSU football player named to the ACC All-Academic Team. That doesn’t jive well with Mrs. Dee Dee’s assessment of Florida State’s signal-caller and Heisman Trophy winner.
Now, I’m not happy only two players out of several dozen are holding a 3.0. On the other hand, who am I to judge? I wouldn’t have qualified for the All-ACC Academic Team while I was at FSU, and I wasn’t busting my tail at practice every night.
We’re proud of you yet again, Jameis. Now, go win us a baseball title.
