The best Christmas gift of 2012

This year was probably my favorite for sports, and that’s saying a lot. My allegiances have had a fairly solid decade, but the last year has been a step above the rest.

Think about it: Florida State did great things this year. ACC champions on the football field, a decent run in the College World Series on the baseball diamond and — who could forget — ACC supremacy for a whole year in men’s basketball. Since I enrolled at Florida State University, I haven’t seen so much success in the same calendar year. And I’m very proud of that.

What’s more, every franchise in Atlanta is a contender. The Braves might have stumbled in a postseason that was built for the better Wild Card team to suffer an upset, but hey, that’s life! They had a great season and they have the potential to be right back in the running again in 2013.

The Hawks are a better team than they were a season ago, but in all reality, they were very close to playing in the Eastern Conference Finals in May. Maybe we’ll see a deep run in the postseason in 2013, but even if they don’t take it to the next level, it’s nice have a team that doesn’t sit perennially in the cellar anymore!

(VOTE: Who deserves to be the NFL’s MVP?)

And the Falcons … oh, the Falcons. They’ve only lost three of their 16 games this calendar year, and while one of those losses was that crushing defeat to the New York Giants in last season’s playoffs, I have faith that this is the year where they win a couple of playoff games, at least. They’re a better, more mature team than they were last season, and they’ve been a real treat to watch this year.

So thanks, Santa, you brought me what I truly wanted this year.

Have a very Merry Christmas, everyone!
