What I’m thankful for

Eat up, folks ... this is one of the best days of the year! (AP Photo/Julio Cortez)

This won’t be a traditional sports blog of mine, but feel free to browse the blog for other stories (or wait until tomorrow for my LSU/Arkansas preview) if you’d like your sports fix as the food coma sets in.

If you’ll excuse me, I’m going to take one day out of the year to write about the things I’m thankful for.

  • I’m thankful for the year 2011. It has been very good to me, and I’ve had a lot of fantastic experiences with my jobs. It started in the Georgia Dome press box, where I was writing a recap of the Chick-Fil-A Bowl in a game that my alma mater had just won and I was surrounded by the fine folks of Tallahassee that I have known for a few years through covering sporting events in college. How could my year be bad when it starts like that?
  • I’m thankful that I could wake up this morning, turn on NBC and see my brother front and center, performing in a Broadway show for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade (if you saw the cast of Newsies at about 9:15 a.m., that was him). I’m also flattered when people lump me in with him in any way, because he’s going to be on Broadway less than a year after graduating college. That’s such a rarity. I haven’t seen a video of his performance yet, but you can be assured I’ll post it on my Twitter page when it goes up on Youtube.
  • I’m thankful for my health and the health of my family and friends. I know that I’m very fortunate to have few obstacles in my life to overcome, and I’ve been able to accomplish many of my goals as a result.
  • I’m thankful that I’ve been able to stay tied in to sports through this blog, and I’m thankful for every one of you who have stopped by to read what I write on here. Time is so valuable these days and the fact that nearly 15,000 of you have taken your time to read my posts is very special to me.
  • I’m thankful that I’m currently living one of my dreams — to work for The Weather Channel. It doesn’t happen every day, but at least once a week, I walk through the doors of my workplace and it sinks in that I work with people that I grew up watching on tv every morning, and I get to see the behind-the-scenes of meteorology that I always wanted to see. Nerdy? Yes. But I hope everyone has the chance to have a job as fulfilling at some point in their lives.
  • I’m thankful for all of my sports teams, even when they aren’t as good as I hope they’ll be. Florida State’s football team has been called a disappointment by many this year, and on the field, I can agree with that. But they are a really good bunch of kids who are coached by a great man in Jimbo Fisher. I can fully support him and everything he does, and I think positive thoughts every day for his young son, Ethan, as he battles Fanconi anemia.
  • I’m thankful that Florida State is favored over Florida on Saturday … on their field. Now, if we can just beat them by more than the line (2.5 points), I’ll be a very happy man. Preferably, by 10 times more than the line. Or more.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
